Privacy Policy

Construction Weather ("the app") is a free iPhone app made by Steve O'Neill, Coventry, UK (contact: admin@checkharbour.co.uk). This policy explains what the app does with information about you.
The short version
- No accounts, no sign-up, no advertising or analytics SDKs, no tracking.
- When the app uses your location (Follow My Location, or "Use current location"), your phone rounds the position to about 1 km (2 decimal places) before anything is sent. Your precise location never leaves your phone.
- What you type in the location search (a town, village or postcode) is sent to Apple's Maps services to suggest matches and find the place. We never receive or store your searches; only the rounded coordinates of the place you choose reach our server.
- Saved locations stay on your phone. For a place found through Apple Maps the app keeps only its name and Apple's place reference (or the postcode you typed) and looks the exact location up again with Apple when needed; it doesn't store the coordinates Apple returns. If you use your current location, it is stored on your phone rounded to about 1 km.
- Recent Searches (the last five places you picked by hand) stay on your phone in the same way: name and Apple's place reference or postcode only, never Apple's coordinates. Follow My Location never adds to them. You can swipe to delete one or clear the list.
- The home-screen widget shows the same forecast as the app. It shares a copy of that forecast and your settings with the app on your phone only (an Apple “App Group”); it sends nothing extra to us beyond the same rounded-coordinates forecast request.
What we process and why
| Data | When | Why | Kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rounded coordinates (~1 km) | Each forecast request | To get the forecast for that area | Forecast cache of up to 6 hours (at most 1 hour while it contains Apple Weather data), keyed by the rounded coordinates only; not linked to you. Aggregate request counters contain no coordinates or IP addresses. |
| IP address | Each request (our server, Cloudflare) | Delivering the response and rate limiting to prevent abuse | Not stored by us; handled transiently by Cloudflare |
| Saved locations, Recent Searches, settings, the widget’s copy of your forecast | On your phone only | Your convenience | Until you delete them or the app |
Lawful basis (UK GDPR): legitimate interests in providing the forecast you asked for.
Who else receives data
- Cloudflare, Inc. hosts our server (weather-api.checkharbour.com).
- Forecast providers: MET Norway, the Met Office, WeatherAPI.com and Apple (WeatherKit). They receive the rounded coordinates from our server, not from your phone, with no identifier for you.
- Apple: place and postcode search uses Apple's Maps services (MapKit search and geocoding), which receive your search text under Apple's privacy policy. No account or identifier from us is sent.
- Sponsor links (SiteFeed Takeoff, Easi-Takeoff) open in Safari only if you tap them. No tracking parameters are added.
Location permission
Location is optional and only ever "While Using" the app or its widget – the app never tracks you in the background. If you add the widget and allow location for it (iOS shows this as “While Using the App or Widgets”), iOS may give the widget a location while it is on your home screen so it can follow you too; it is rounded to about 1 km on your phone, exactly as in the app, and only used when Follow My Location is on. From version 1.1, Follow My Location is on by default: when you open the app or return to it, it checks where you are and switches the forecast to your area if you have moved more than about 1 km. You can turn Follow My Location off in the app’s Settings, and the app then keeps the location you chose. If you don’t allow location access, the app explains this once and keeps your chosen location. In version 1.0 the app asks only when you tap "Use current location". You can turn location access off at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services.
Children
The app is not aimed at children and collects no personal information knowingly from anyone.
Your rights
You can ask about any data we hold (we hold none linked to you), and you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
